Chapter Nineteen

For in telling those tales of the truest of knights,

all the title and text of their works is taken

from how lords hazard their lives for loyal love,

endured for that duty’s sake dreadful trials

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, line 1126-1997

Maybe I did doze off for a little. When I opened my eyes, the woods we passed looked exactly the same. The monotony of the scenery led me to start daydreaming, and of course the focus of my attention was that man riding on the horse directly in front of me, looking as much a knight as anyone around him. All that I’d learned about Harry DuMont over the brief time I knew him could be fit onto the back of a postcard:

• War veteran.

• Good horseman, and apparently, swordsman.

• Those blue eyes! (Probably gets away with murder.)

• Likes blondes and armor.

• Loyal.

• Sweet.

• Makes Jane laugh.

I decided it was time to flesh out this biography a little more. After all, we had the time.

I ambled my horse over to Harry’s. His eyes looked a little red, and he didn’t look entirely focused. A little like me before my short nap on horseback. “Anything wrong, Harry?”

Harry shot me a tight-lipped smile and shook his head no. I yawned and slapped my face a few times to try and stay awake, and that made him laugh. I tried again. “Please, Harry, talk to me. Otherwise, I’m going to fall asleep and fall off this horse and ruin the last dress anyone will ever loan me.”

“It’s your adrenaline leaving your body,” he said, finally. “You used up all your energy saving that girl. Classic problem in wartime, when you’re being shot at in the morning, but still have the whole day to get through.”

“Keep talking, Harry. I don’t care about what; just tell me a story.”

“I’d rather see you slap yourself again.”

“How about I slap you?” I held up my palm in a threatening manner.

Harry laughed.

I persisted. “Come on, Harry, tell me something about yourself. We’re here, dependent on each other, and I hardly know anything about you except that you speak French like a native, and you were very kind to me last night. And I’ve convinced you that I’m not a princess, and… Oh, and that you definitely dance like a white man.” I laughed, recalling his stiff-legged moves on the dance floor at the feast.

Harry smirked. “Guilty. I would never have been let in the door to audition for Soul Train.”

Silence ensued. Perhaps in the army they don’t talk a lot when they’re traveling, or maybe he hadn’t been taught the art of conversation. “Okay, I guess I’ll have to ask you some pro forma questions: What’s the last movie you saw, for instance?”

“Oh, hmm, yes,” he smiled. “The plot was fairly straightforward. It involved a nurse whose uniform looked somewhat inappropriate, yet so very right on her. Her male patient couldn’t give himself a sponge bath, but with his nurse’s special assistance…”

I shook my head. Typical man. “Alrighty then, now I know your discerning taste in movies.
